How to choose a Spey line
Start with your exact rod model, weight, and length above. The table separates chart grain targets from catalog candidates, so a nearby product size is a starting point rather than a promise of the same feel. A Scandi head generally suits lighter flies and a tapered leader; a compact Skagit head can carry compatible sink tips and larger flies. Check the line maker’s tip guidance and count the full casting load before settling on a size.
For longer heads, compare both grain weight and head length with the space behind your cast. Your casting tempo, tip, and fly can change which size feels best. The finder includes older rods, so confirm availability before buying a line.
For example, the Winston BIIx 13'3" #7/8 has a 450 grain Scandi chart entry and a 510 grain Skagit chart entry. The NAM REN 6116-5 has separate estimated style values. Use the source or basis shown beside a result to tell a chart reference, rod guidance, and a nearby product candidate apart.
